💗 Feed your Family from your backyard – A Mungo Move Initiative 💗

7 Sabrina Love Foundation parents and Vuyiseka Mbikawana, our cook at Die Sterreweg attended a 3 day training program presented by Mungo. Mungo has a small non profit division called “Mungo Move” which is used to upskill people in the community. Sabrina Love Foundation parents and teachers were invited to join in the “Feed your Family from your backyard” initiative where families learn about starting sustainable vegetable gardens.

Bongi Mente, Indi’s mom, has been a part of the

Bongi Mente, Indi’s mom, has been a part of the Sabrina Love family and a classroom facilitator at Die Sterreweg since 2016. 💗

Bongi: ”I am a classroom facilitator to the Rainbow Class – children that fall between the age group of 10 – 16 years. We teach them self help skills ,and do lots of lovely educational activities. I also work with the children that are in buggys*. I love to stimulate those kids it is easy for me to work with those kids.“

Indi, an only child, celebrated his 9th birthday on Wednesday and has been a student at Die Sterreweg since he was 3 years old.

Indi has cerebral palsy and has very limited ability to mobilize. He is able to roll by himself and sit for a few seconds. These are really great goals he’s achieved but unfortunately he isn’t able to crawl, get up or walk.

As children with cerebral palsy grow and develop movement becomes harder for them and Indi in particular is a very big boy and is therefore completely dependent on his mom for all his needs.

Indi is such a happy healthy boy. Bongi is a really inspiring single mom who motivates the other parents and she is such an asset to the foundation.

To make it easier for her to safely transfer him from his wheelchair to bath/bed and vice versa they would really benefit from a hoist. This will help Bongi protect her back and as Indi grows and she can continue to independently care for him without calling other to help her transfer him.

*Buggy – Some children with cerebral palsy (CP) are transported in buggies until they master the skills of walking without the need of any assistance. Many never learn to walk and progress from a buggy to a wheelchair as a means of maximizing their independence and improving their motor and functional skills

💗 Farm animals make learning fun 💗

Heidi, our intrepid occupational therapist has been very busy ensuring that all of our children maintain their daily routines and keep up with their learning while we continue with our home based education program.

Every 2 weeks we work around a theme – this theme is encapsulated in all of their activities – these last 2 weeks our theme has been “Farm animals”! A firm favourite!

Theme booklets were designed, created and distributed to the children by our field workers. The children’s fine motor skills are exercised by having to colour, trace and create beautiful little crafts. Counting, colouring in and crafting is such a fun way to learn!

Our little ones are so proud of their creations!

When it comes to inclusive education, people speak

When it comes to inclusive education, people speak of barriers to learning – we believe that the barrier is not always the child, it is often the environment around them. It is our role to ensure that inclusion is as successful as possible.

Mivi (Mivuyo), born with arthrogryposis, a Grade 3 student at Plettenberg Bay Primary school accesses his education through a specialised computer as well as writing his work with his mouth. This can put a lot of strain on his neck and his back. To ensure a better ergonomic position for him to work from, he requires a height adjustable table so that it can be adjusted to the height of his wheelchair. The work surface can be slanted for when he is writing with his mouth and then also adjusted to be flat for when he is working on his computer.

Debbie Badenhorst, an Occupational Therapist from the Eden and Central Karoo Education District, had funding available to modify schools and make them more accessible for children. Mivi was the very proud recipient of this height adjustable table.

Thank you so much Eden and Central Karoo Education District for making Mivi’s work space more comfortable for him to work at! 💗

Amanda is 38 years old, and has been with the #SabrinaLoveFoundation since 2007. Amanda and her team have been instrumental in making sure that our home visits, care drives and super food deliveries run smoothly. She is an organisational whizz and is never one to turn down a challenge! ✨

Amanda manages and works with our fieldworkers and serves as a crucial link between the Sabrina Love Foundation and the parents.

Quinique Smith, 24 years old has been with the Sabrina Love Foundation and working as a classroom facilitator since 2016. She was also the winner of our toy design and manufacturing project!

To keep our creative juices flowing, we had a competition where our Sabrina teachers were challenged with designing and creating an educational toy, made specifically for one of our children and accompanied by a goal for the child that the toy will help to achieve.

Quinique was announced as the overall winner, she made the most toys and each one was high quality and well thought out! ⭐

We are so proud of the amazing toys that were produced by each of the ladies who participated!

A big thank you to Olivia Scrubs for donating the beautiful scrub top that was the main prize. 💗

Sabrina Ambassador, Chantel 'Hotpants' Nienaber, i

Sabrina Ambassador, Chantel 'Hotpants' Nienaber, is one of South Africa’s top female trail runners and a well known philanthropist.

Chantel first fell in love with trail running during her first multi-day 250 km stage race – the Cape Odyssey (in 2007), as a complete novice. At the age of 37 (2011), she upped her game and realised that she had the potential to start running on a competitive level. Since then Chantel has had over a 150 podium finishes, 90 of those being 1st place titles.

Chantel previously qualified to represent South Africa, in the Ultra Marathon Trail running World Champs in Wales and in Annecy France.

Chantel is a free-spirited, person that loves running wild and free – being one with nature. She’s likes “challenging the norm”; subsequently earning her the nick name: “Hot Pants Nienaber”. She is also passionate about using her talents to make a difference in peoples lives. The Sabrina Love foundation is a cause very close to her heart, as her husband struggles with a disability too.

As Chantel is an official Sabrina Love Ambassador athlete, we would like to appeal to you to help make her participation in the various competitions and races possible, from the prestigious Otter African Trail Run to overseas events. Many of these races carry a high cost but with her talents every cent towards getting her to them counts.

Nelson Mandela Day was founded in recognition our beloved former South African president’s dedication to the service of humanity. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate our Madiba’s birthday by being called to action every year and celebrate by making a small change or contribute to the upliftment of someone who is less fortunate than ourselves.

Our children have had a wonderfully fun art week this week in celebration of Mandela Day on 18 July. Some beautiful images of their artistic flair and talents put to great work.

To keep our budding artists inspired and creative, activity packs with crafting resources have been delivered to their homes by our teachers.

Not only is painting enjoyable and relaxing, it also brings children and teenagers great joy and builds self-esteem.
