For most of us, the idea of pulling on a pair of shoes and quickly doing up the laces, comes as second nature – we do not even give it a second thought. We dress ourselves quickly and effortlessly and continue on our way. Many of our parents still have to assist their children with their daily dressing routines.
Continuing with our theme of “Winter” this week and the extra clothes that we need to layer up with to keep warm, our emphasis has been on “self-care” and “dressing skills”.
Our field workers and teachers have been working with our parents and our children, learning and practicing winter dressing skills, while showing the importance of the child being independent to the parents. The ability of children, regardless of age, to dress themselves helps improve family daily routines.
By learning to dress themselves, children’s confidence and independence is boosted and also gives them a sense of achievement.
Fastening of buttons and zips and the tying of shoe laces is wonderful for working on, and the improvement of fine motor skills.
