Mivuyo (Mivi) Tyanase was born with Athrogryphosis, and as a result has very limited use of his arms and legs. Last year, with the help of Phillip and his team from the arugus, we managed to raise enough money to purchase Mivi a power chair, which he calls his car, and has given him the freedom to move around independently . This year we would like to enable him to access a computer, so that he can start developing the skills he will need to participate in class one day. He was recently assessed by Inclusive Solutions to see how they could help provide alternative ways of controlling his computer. One of the many items which worked really beautifully for Mivi was The SmartNav 4. This is a total hands-free mouse solution. With built-in Dwell Clicking Software and a free On-screen Keyboard. SmartNav 4 uses an infrared (IR) camera to track your head movements. You reflect IR light back to the SmartNav, which sends instructions to your computer to move your mouse cursor. Mivi was therefore able to independently access the computer without the help of anyone, and being the smart fellow that he is, he caught on really quickly. These computer skills will be crucial to him being able to access the school curriculum just like this able bodied friends. We have received a quote for the SmartNav and all the software and adaptions that he will need. We are hoping to raise R30000 to ensure that Mivi’s physical disability does not stand in the way of what he will no doubt one day achieve
