“For the average person training can be a difficult, especially for open water. In order to finish the 5km swim you would need be doing interval distance training such as 400m and not sprint training to build up your endurance. If you able to hold 30 min per 1km which is 3min/100m you should be fine to handle this challenge.
With the 1mile or 1650m you want to be able to swim 2,5km comfortably in order to handle this, the further the swim the less of a struggle this challenge will be. With this training you want to do interval training of 100m/200m with trying to take minimal rest.
When it comes to swimming you want to remain as calm as possible, when you panic you use more energy and become inefficient which you don’t want.
Also you want to work on conditioning your legs even if you don’t use them like me, but because your quad is one of the biggest muscles in your body it requires a lot more oxygen, so the more you condition your legs the more the other muscles like in your arms will receive more oxygen. The best way to achieve this is to kick using a board but NO fins and do a lot of short fast kicking.”
