Ever considered the Ocean Challenge swim but didn’t think you were fit enough? This year Sabrina’s dad will swim for the 12th time and shares his insights.
We set up a line of buoys every 500m that swimmers line up with, but basically once you have left the beach your heading is the BI hotel. There is normally help from a current moving at about 1 to 2 km/hr.
Water temperature has varied over the years but is normally around 18 degrees C and you can wear a wetsuit. With the wetsuit and the higher density of sea water you are more buoyant than swimming in a pool. I find the ocean swim much easier than in a pool. If you are comfortable swimming nonstop for 2km in the pool with all the turns, then you will find this +/-5,5km ocean swim just as comfortable.
The last section around the BI hotel can be choppy with the water moving through the channel but it’s such a short section and so close to the finish that it is very doable. There are a lot of boats on the water for assistance if you need it, but all in all its not as formidable as it looks.
