On Friday 15th June 2018, Die Sterreweg birthed its very first Youth sports day in collaboration with Masizame Shelter. With the month of June being the month to celebrate youth all around South Africa – what better way to celebrate this than through a sports tournament.
The sports activities included a modified version of basketball and cricket. This created awareness within the community of how youth with various capabilities are able to participate together and ultimately community collaboration and integration was fostered. It was an amazing experience for our youth to learn from one another and wonderful for us as staff to witness them displaying patience with one another. It was an opportunity for the staff to see the children exploring their capabilities and eventually everyone could join in the activities together and fun was had by all.
The event initially seemed like something impossible to take on and to make a reality, however, what was once only an idea was turned into reality with just a simple decision to follow through and persevere.
Through this event, the youth and everyone involved were able to perceive what they themselves are capable of. Before you can achieve a dream, you have to dream a dream. And if we collectively as organisations, as a society — and as a world — are able to dream – we are able to build a braver, kinder world.
We are thankful to Masizame for partnering with us, the field band who assisted tremendously with running the sport games as well as the police department who also availed themselves to give the youth a talk on crime and safety, which all contributed in making the day a huge success! – Tasha-Leigh Williams Occupational Therapist (and all round super human) – Die Sterreweg
